Tetrahedral Torch

This stainless steel torch was a commission designed specifically for Burning Man,to light the entrance to my clients camp. It burns a non-volatile lamp oil which is contained in the fuel chamber at the base. The three fiberglass wicks meet in the center and wick the oil up to the flames above the small radial discs. It stays lit even in a stiff breeze. The large filler cap in the center indicates the opening to fill the fuel chamber. No funnel required.
It is interesting to note the industrial cyber-punk aesthetic emerging from that event and the various representations in fashion and art and other products which try to capture the salient flavor. My attempt here ,was to create a sacred geometry shape fabricated in a modern material,thus blending the ancient past with an unpredictable future,while providing a practical device for innovative lighting...
Welded stainless steel with brass plaque and bronze plumbing fittings retrofit as wick holders. About 20 pieces in this piece.

I just watched the movie"Gladiator"again and noticed a similar lamp in one of the background sets.I know the paintings of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema(1836-1912)and others were used as resource material for director Ridley Scott's team of designers to try and capture the "authentic"look of ancient Rome.One scene in particular closely recreates the painting titled " Egyptian Juggler"(1870).
