Squaring the Circle by ou8nrtist2 Squaring the Circle by ou8nrtist2
This sculpture is a visual allusion to the ancient geometers quest to square the circle using only compass and straightedge.
That was a 2 dimensional exercise,I have here extrapolated and represented the idea in a three dimensional format.
It has been subsequently proven in 1882 to be an impossible task though many have come close.
To me it serves as an example of certain vain efforts and quests that in spite of the fact that they can never be solved completely ,have nevertheless a TRANS FORMATIVE or transcendental effect on the seeker and thus serve an enlightening function anyway.
It sort of teaches one to redirect focus on process rather than outcome…

It's so beautiful. If you could recreate this in a pendant, I bet a lot of people (men and women) would love to own one!

What a great thing to have in a Zen garden! I'd be writing checks to you if I had one... alas, I'm in no danger of actually having a Zen pretty much anything, so it'll have to wait.

btw, I like the reflection of you in the photo. Good job you were wearing clothes, eh?

I changed the photo because I think it is better represented as a hanging piece.
I didn't notice the reflection.
I had only a shirt on...oops
Don't want to scare the kids...

Ever see that eBay shot (it's a classic) of the guy selling the teakettle? The one where he took the photo while naked and - *poof* - there he is in all his tubby glory! What a hoot!

It almost appears as though the sphere is about to "break free" of the confines of the cube as well (getting "out of the box"), to me at least, which is pretty neat. I love the warped reflection. :)

I looked at it at great length last night and decided it should be a hanging piece.
Not sure if this change of photos is an improvement though...

It loses a little bit of symbolism in that you are no longer visible in the sphere breaking free of the cube, but I don't think it does it a disservice necessarily. The background is not as noisy as I remember the other piece being though, which gives more focus to the shapes and the reflections. I still like it. :)

I'm liking it more and more,
so now I'm enlarging it in my mind thinking this was merely a model of a larger version to come,
perhaps accenting the entrance to some corporate headquarters somewhere...
