Carving wood has an intimacy and sensuality that is absent with metal. It is a dialogue with a once living entity. One cannot simple impress ones will upon the material as with metal.Wood must be wooed. You may have a form in mind but the material will tell you if it wants to manifest your form,or not.The resistance of hardwood forces a slowing, and a much more gradual pacing to reveal the form.Ultimately this teaches patience and a redirecting of attention to the process instead of the outcome...

That is a beautifully crafted piece of art! I can see you spent some time sanding the end grain or
it would not have stained as well as it did.

I'm on a roll.
There's a whole lifetime of seasoned logs in my old mans studio to carve on in Maine.Every time I visit I plan to chew up another one...The act itself is so sensual,so Zen,it really calms me down and gets me re-tuned to the Universe...

Next time you head out that way, you might consider swinging through Mass and stopping off to see this dude >>> [link] <<<
Betting you two would have a lot to talk about.

In the meantime, I'm looking forward [with your more or less eager anticipation] to seeing what you come up with next.

Actually the plan is to have both studios fit for either metal or wood.I just rebuilt my old mans dipstick 160 in Maine and next time I visit the Thermalarc Pak 5 plasma cutter gets refit.

Fantastic wood carving. Interesting to see a shape in wood that's so common with forged metal
